Digest
HB 4031 criminalizes squatting by making it a state jail felony to unlawfully occupy another person's property without consent. The bill also establishes a process allowing property owners, authorized agents, or lawful tenants to request a county sheriff’s immediate removal of unauthorized occupants. If a complaint is filed, the sheriff must serve notice and allow the occupant to provide evidence of a valid lease. If no valid lease is presented, the sheriff is authorized to remove the occupant and arrest them for trespassing.
