HJR 159 proposes a constitutional amendment to authorize the Texas Legislature to prohibit an individual from receiving a homestead exemption from ad valorem taxes if a registered sex offender occupies the property on January 1 of the tax year. The amendment allows the legislature to define "registered sex offender" for this purpose. If approved by voters, this amendment would be added to Section 1-b, Article VIII of the Texas Constitution.The proposed amendment will be submitted to Texas voters for approval in the November 4, 2025, election.
