SB 1722 mandates that all Texas school districts and open-enrollment charter schools adopt parental leave policies for classroom teachers. It provides up to 40 days of paid parental leave for teachers who have worked at least 12 months and 1,250 hours before taking leave for the birth or adoption of a child. Teachers who do not meet these criteria are entitled to up to 12 weeks of parental leave, but they must use all available paid vacation and sick leave before taking unpaid leave. The bill also establishes a state-funded Teacher Families Allotment, reimbursing school districts for the cost of paid leave. These policies must be implemented by the 2025-2026 school year.
