SB 1732 expands the authority of advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) and physician assistants (PAs) to prescribe or order Schedule II controlled substances within narcotic drug treatment programs. The bill amends Section 157.0511(b-1) of the Occupations Code to allow a physician to delegate this prescribing authority to APRNs and PAs in narcotic drug treatment programs that have been issued a permit under Chapter 466, Health and Safety Code. Previously, delegation was only allowed in: Hospital facility-based practices, such as for patients admitted for at least 24 hours or emergency department patients. Hospice care, for patients who have executed a written certification of terminal illness and are receiving care from a qualified hospice provider. This bill adds narcotic drug treatment programs as a third setting where APRNs and PAs can prescribe or order Schedule II drugs under physician delegation.
