Interim Hearing | School Schedules, Enrollment & Teacher Pay

The Texas Senate Committee on Education will hold an interim hearing on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at 8:00 a.m. in Room E1.028 of the Texas Capitol.
The committee will examine instructional time in Texas public schools, including districts using four-day school weeks and other hybrid models. Senators will review the decline in the number of school days, its effects on students and families, and potential guidelines for maximizing student achievement.
Lawmakers will also study declining school-age enrollment and shifting enrollment patterns across Texas, including strategies to improve the efficient use of tax dollars as districts respond to changing student populations.
The committee will additionally examine access to experts and leadership resources for improving academic performance and consider ways to strengthen the school transformation leadership pipeline.
Senators will also review implementation of House Bill 2 from the 89th Legislature, including teacher pay increases and efforts to close the rural teacher pay gap. Invited and public testimony will be heard, with public testimony limited to two minutes per person.
