For the 89th Legislative Session, Speaker Dustin Burrows appointed Rep. Fairly to five House committees: Appropriations — with assignments to the Subcommittee on Article II (Health & Human Services) and the Subcommittee on Article III (Education) — the Select Committee on Civil Discourse & Freedom of Speech in Higher Education, the Local & Consent Calendars Committee, and the Natural Resources Committee. The five-committee assignment, along with seats on two budget-writing subcommittees, is a notable workload for a freshman member.

House District 87 is one of the largest geographic districts in the Texas House, encompassing the upper Texas Panhandle and the bulk of Amarillo. Rep. Fairly succeeded Rep. Four Price, who represented the district from 2011 until his retirement in 2025, after winning the Republican primary in 2024 and the general election in November 2024.
