HB 1493, known as the Life of the Mother Act, amends the Civil Practice and Remedies Code to provide an affirmative defense for physicians and healthcare providers in civil actions for alleged violations of abortion-related laws. The defense applies when reasonable medical judgment was exercised to provide treatment to a pregnant woman facing certain medical emergencies, such as ectopic pregnancies, previable premature ruptures of membranes, or other pregnancy complications that could likely cause serious bodily injury.
