HB 153 amends Section 124.002(a) of the Texas Government Code to expand eligibility for veterans treatment court programs. Under the current law, participation in these programs requires the consent of the state’s attorney. HB 153 removes this requirement, making veterans and service members eligible if the court determines that they have a qualifying condition or history, such as a brain injury, mental illness, or trauma associated with military service, or if the program could promote public safety through the veteran’s rehabilitation. The act would take effect on September 1, 2025.
