Digest
HB 183 proposes the establishment of a formal review process for library materials in Texas public schools. Under this bill, the State Board of Education (SBOE) must create a system allowing parents to submit requests to review library materials they deem inappropriate or sexually explicit. Once a request is submitted, the SBOE has three weeks to assess and classify the material as either appropriate or inappropriate for specific grade levels. Rejected materials are placed on a list that schools cannot make available to students in affected grade levels. Additionally, schools must restrict access to materials under review. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) may assist in cases where the SBOE cannot make a determination, and both entities may develop criteria for material review.
