HB 2047 seeks to address firearm safety by amending Section 46.13 of the Penal Code to increase the penalty for making a firearm accessible to a minor. Currently classified as a Class C misdemeanor, the offense would be elevated to a Class A misdemeanor, significantly increasing the potential consequences to include up to a year in jail and/or a fine of up to $4,000. The bill also repeals Subsection (e), which had previously provided exceptions to penalties if a child accessed a firearm under specific circumstances, such as theft or unlawful entry. By strengthening penalties and removing exceptions, this legislation aims to deter unsafe firearm storage and reduce accidental incidents involving minors.
