HB 2178 allows peace officers to install and use a mobile tracking device on a vehicle without first obtaining a court order under emergency circumstances. It applies when there is probable cause to believe the vehicle is being used in the commission of certain serious offenses, including human trafficking, felony evasion, or violent crimes. Within 72 hours of installation, the officer must obtain judicial approval, or the device must be removed, and any evidence collected becomes inadmissible in court.
