Digest
HB 233 mandates that health benefit plans cover the cost of hair prostheses (wigs) for breast cancer patients undergoing or who have undergone medical treatment that results in hair loss. Specifically, HB 233 requires health plans to cover at least $100 toward a hair prosthesis as prescribed by the patient's treating physician, with this coverage extended to repairs or replacements unless caused by misuse or loss by the patient. Additionally, plans cannot charge an extra premium for this benefit, and the coverage may be subject to the same copayments, deductibles, and coinsurance as other health plan benefits. This Act will apply to health plans issued or renewed on or after January 1, 2026, and takes effect on September 1, 2025.
