Digest
HB 2387 expands eligibility for certain public safety benefits to chaplains employed or formally designated by fire departments, police departments, and other law enforcement agencies. The bill amends the Government Code to classify chaplains as public safety employees, making them eligible for presumptive medical benefits related to job-related illnesses or injuries, including heart attacks, strokes, tuberculosis, respiratory illnesses, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Chaplains would also qualify for workers’ compensation benefits if they suffer from PTSD linked to a traumatic event experienced on duty. Additionally, the bill requires political subdivisions to provide paid leave to chaplains for job-related injuries or illnesses, similar to firefighters and police officers. It also applies these changes to interlocal agreements and collective bargaining agreements entered into on or after the effective date.
