Digest
HB 269 establishes the Institute for Chronic Wasting Disease Research as part of Texas A&M University, aimed at addressing chronic wasting disease (CWD) in deer populations. The Institute will study the disease's progression, analyze genetic profiles of infected deer, and develop prevention, mitigation, and treatment strategies, especially for breeder deer. The bill authorizes the Institute to accept public or private funding and requires collaboration with deer breeders. Deer breeders providing deer for research purposes are entitled to compensation, particularly if their deer are impacted by research activities. The Institute’s implementation is contingent on state funding; however, it may proceed with available funds if specific appropriations are not made. This Act becomes effective on September 1, 2025.
