HB 2771 modifies firearm possession restrictions for felons. Under current law, felons may not possess a firearm until five years after release from confinement or supervision and only inside their residence after that period. This bill limits that restriction to felons convicted of offenses listed in Article 42A.054(a), Code of Criminal Procedure (which includes violent felonies such as murder, aggravated robbery, and sexual assault). The change applies retroactively to all affected individuals, but does not overturn previous final convictions.
