HB 3613 lowers the threshold for what constitutes truant conduct and parental contribution to truancy by adjusting the number of unexcused absences required for school action. It allows school districts to refer students to truancy court after three unexcused absences in four weeks, rather than waiting for ten unexcused absences in six months. The bill also requires schools to notify parents earlier about their child’s absences and clarifies that schools have discretion to delay or forgo truancy referrals if preventative measures are working.
