HB 3618 requires the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) to adopt new policies regarding searches of female inmates. It mandates that searches of areas where a partially or fully undressed female inmate is present must be conducted by a female correctional officer, if available. If a male officer must conduct the search, the officer must file a written report within 72 hours explaining why. The bill also limits visual body cavity searches for female inmates participating in education, vocational training, rehabilitation, or prerelease programs, only allowing them in exigent circumstances or when there is reasonable suspicion.
