HB 4185 changes how Texas selects its Commissioner of Education. Instead of being appointed by the governor, the Commissioner will be elected in statewide elections, beginning in 2026. The bill also establishes criteria for removal from office and allows voters to recall the Commissioner for misuse of public resources​.
