HB 5305 mandates that students in public and open-enrollment charter schools must recite the Pledge of Allegiance to the U.S. and Texas flags once daily. Schools are required to display both flags prominently in each classroom, though they are not obligated to use public funds for their purchase. Parents can request that their children be excused from reciting the pledge, and excused students must wait outside the room during the recitation. Additionally, a one-minute period of silence must follow the pledge each day, allowing students to reflect, pray, or meditate.
