HB 547 requires firearm owners to report the loss or theft of a firearm within 24 hours of becoming aware of its loss or theft. Failure to report constitutes a Class C misdemeanor, escalating to a Class B misdemeanor for repeat offenses. Law enforcement officers receiving such reports must forward the information to the Texas Department of Public Safety, which will submit it to the National Crime Information Center.
