Digest
SB 1724 makes various statutory changes to reflect same-sex marriage and parenting rights in Texas law. It removes outdated provisions referencing heterosexual marriages and replaces them with gender-neutral terminology in the Family Code, Government Code, Agriculture Code, Estates Code, and other statutes. The bill repeals sections of the Family Code that prohibited the recognition of same-sex marriages and civil unions. Additionally, it eliminates language regarding the criminalization of homosexual conduct that remains in Texas statutes despite being struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court. The bill ensures that same-sex parents have the same rights in child custody, adoption, and inheritance as opposite-sex couples.
