The Texas House Subcommittee on County & Regional Government will hold an interim hearing on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. in Room E2.028 of the Texas Capitol.

The subcommittee will study the ability of Texas counties to recruit, train, and retain law enforcement officers. Lawmakers will examine disparities among counties in funding, contracting, and employment for law enforcement agencies and consider potential solutions for strengthening county law enforcement.

The hearing will also examine the statutory framework governing county medical examiner offices, including population thresholds and authorization for intercounty medical examiner districts. Lawmakers will evaluate the number of counties maintaining medical examiner offices compared with those relying on justices of the peace and consider how the current system affects the consistency, timeliness, and professional quality of death investigations across Texas.
