Event Details

The Texas Senate Committee on Finance will hold an interim hearing on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. in Room E1.036 of the Texas Capitol.

The committee will examine options for further reducing property taxes in Texas, with a particular focus on continued increases in the homestead exemption.

Senators will review the effects of recent property tax legislation that the committee notice says has eliminated school property taxes for the average senior homeowner and reduced school taxes by half for homeowners under age 65.

The committee will also study the potential effects of reducing the age at which homeowners qualify for the senior homestead exemption from 65 to 55. According to the hearing notice, such a change would freeze home values for property tax purposes ten years earlier for more than three million homeowners.

Invited and public testimony will be heard. Public testimony will be limited to two minutes per witness.
