A 5th-generation Central Texan, Rep. Gerdes grew up in the region and met his wife Samantha on the first day of class at the University of Texas at Austin. The Gerdes family resides in Smithville. Samantha is an attorney and serves as general counsel for Texas firearm manufacturer LaRue Tactical.

Before his election to the Texas House, Rep. Gerdes worked with former Texas Governor Rick Perry for over a decade, including during Perry’s tenure as U.S. Secretary of Energy. As Senior Advisor to Secretary Perry, Gerdes managed the Secretary’s agenda, including travel to all 17 national laboratories and to more than 25 countries.

For the 89th Legislative Session, Speaker Dustin Burrows appointed Rep. Gerdes to three House committees, including the Calendars Committee — which controls the flow of legislation to the House floor — as well as the Energy Resources Committee and the Licensing & Administrative Procedures Committee.
