Biography
Rep. Janie Lopez is a Republican member of the Texas House of Representatives, first elected in 2023 to represent District 37, which covers Willacy County and part of Cameron County in the Rio Grande Valley. She earned an Associate’s degree from Texas Southmost College, a Bachelor’s from the University of Texas at Brownsville, and Master’s degrees in Education and Business.

The daughter of parents who legally migrated from Mexico and the first in her family to attend and graduate college, Rep. Lopez is a mental healthcare professional who has worked with at-risk children, veterans, and first responders with PTSD. Before her election to the House, she served as a San Benito Consolidated Independent School District (SBCISD) trustee, where she was the school board’s Vice-President and Chair of Finance and Administration. In November 2022, she became the first Hispanic Republican elected to represent House District 37.
For the 89th Legislative Session, Speaker Dustin Burrows appointed Rep. Lopez to the House Committees on Agriculture & Livestock, Appropriations — where she serves on the Subcommittees on Article III and on Articles I, IV, & V — and Calendars.
