Committee Jurisdiction
The Texas House Committee on Culture, Recreation, and Tourism oversees a broad range of issues related to the preservation, promotion, and regulation of Texas’s natural, cultural, and historical assets, as well as the state’s tourism and recreational economy. The committee has jurisdiction over the creation, operation, and control of state parks, including park development and maintenance connected to the sporting goods sales and use tax, excluding matters within the jurisdiction of the House Appropriations Committee. It also regulates hunting, fishing, wildlife conservation, and other recreational activities throughout the state.
In addition, the committee is responsible for the promotion and development of Texas’s cultural identity, historical resources, monuments, memorials, and heritage, as well as international and interstate tourism efforts that shape Texas’s public image. This includes oversight of tourism promotion activities, cultural industries such as music and the arts, and participation in regional compacts related to marine and fisheries management.
The committee’s jurisdiction includes oversight of several state agencies and entities, such as:
- Texas Parks and Wildlife Department
- Texas Commission on the Arts
- Texas State Library and Archives Commission
- Texas Historical Commission
- State Preservation Board
- State Cemetery Committee
- Texas Economic Development and Tourism Office
- Gulf States Marine Fisheries Compact
- Committee on the Formation of a Texas Bicentennial Commission
- Offices of state government to the extent they promote the Texas music industry
